Cambodians Encouraged to Preserve Fish during Peak Season

PHNOM PENH: The Fisheries Administration is encouraging Cambodians to take advantage of peak fishing season to make more dried fish and prahok (fermented fish) over the next couple weeks.

It highlighted that the fishing harvest peaks from January 15-21 in the Tonle Sap River, especially in Phnom Penh and Kandal Province.

With an increase in catch, the price of fish will drop and make the Cambodian fish reserve staples more affordable.

The Fisheries Administration also called on relevant authorities to help facilitate the production of fermented and dried fish. According to the World Fish Center, fish is a major part of the Cambodian diet, accounting for 61 % of households’ animal protein intake and is the second most consumed food after rice.
